Idiosyncratic frequency as a measure of derivation vs. inflection

چکیده
There is ongoing discussion about how to conceptualize the nature of distinction between inflection and derivation. A common approach relies on qualitative differences in semantic relationship inflectionally versus derivationally related words: yields ways discuss same concept different syntactic contexts, while derivation gives rise words for concepts. This differential can be expected manifest predictability word frequency that are or inflectionally: predicting token a based information its base form should easier when two an inflectional relationship, rather than derivational one. We compare prediction error magnitude statistical models distributional French. The results conform expectations: it predict from properties those word. Prediction provides quantitative, continuous method explore individual processes yielded by employing information, which turn used draw conclusions manifestation inflection–derivation distinction.

22 English Inflection and Derivation
Modern English approaches the ideal of an isolating language. Open-class items have comparatively few forms, so that many inflectional categories either remain unmarked, or are expressed periphrastically. The inflectional system is particularly simple, even by the standards of a West Germanic language. Regular paradigms contain at most four forms, and the inflectional exponents that distinguish...
متن کاملSMOR: A German Computational Morphology Covering Derivation, Composition and Inflection
We present a morphological analyser for German inflection and word formation implemented in finite state technology. Unlike purely lexicon-based approaches, it can account for productive word formation like derivation and composition. The implementation is based on the Stuttgart Finite State Transducer Tools (SFST-Tools), a non-commercial FST platform. It is fast and achieves a high coverage.
متن کاملBetween Inflection and Derivation Paradigmatic Lexical Functions in Morphological Databases
This article shows the use of lexical functions in the MorDebe lexical database system. Lexical functions are used in MorDebe to bridge the gap between derivation and inflection – to model relations between word-forms that are derivational from one perspective but inflectional from another. However, lexical functions in MorDebe range over lemmas rather than word-meanings and are hence significa...
متن کاملNeurocognitive Contexts for Morphological Complexity: Dissociating Inflection and Derivation
We review experimental findings about the processing of morphologically complex words, and provide a neuro-cognitive account of the mechanisms that underlie this processing. Within the framework of the brain network that supports language comprehension, we argue that complex words created by regular and rule-based combinations, such as regular inflections in English (e.g. played, jumps), engage...
متن کاملRunning head: FREQUENCY EFFECTS IN CHINESE INFLECTION
Chinese inflection differs from that of European languages in that it is fully parsable in the orthography, which raises the possibility that Chinese inflected forms may not show the surface frequency effects found in other languages. Five lexical decision experiments were conducted to examine this issue. They showed that surface frequency did indeed affect reaction times, independent of base f...
